"Cornbread muffins" A valley tradition
2013-12-05T04:57

Homemade corn bread muffins are part of the tradition of the annual Thanksgiving in the Valley.  This marks the 29th year that Monte Flock and family have made the muffins for the community meal. Preparations are already underway.

"Got the corn harvested, bought some new wheat, so we have this year's wheat," said Flock.  "My corn this year is absolutely beautiful, it's bright wonderful yellow hard corn, got it harvested and today I'm cleaning it".

With the help from his neighbors, his neice and extended family, they will clean the crop by hand, grind it up and mix it all together.  On Thursday morning at 5am Flock starts the ovens.  Years ago, Flock purchased the ovens and stoves from the old Morrill High School cafeteria.  With large equipment, they can cook 120 muffins at a time. On Thanksgiving morning, Flock and his family will cook over 700 muffins for Thanksgiving in the Valley and for the free Thanksgiving Dinner at the American Legion in Morrill.

Flock says in that 720 muffins there will be only $4.63 worth of wheat and $3.32 worth of corn.  Platte Valley Bank donates all the milk and eggs to make the cornbread muffins.

Flock says the secret to his muffins is that they are fresh. His his family recipe calls for whole grain corn, whole wheat ground, along with sugar, eggs, baking powder, milk and corn oil.  "What makes the muffins good is that the ingredients are fresh and grain will be ground this week," Flock said.

Sugarbeets do extremely well in 2013
2013-12-05T04:55

Sugarbeet farmers have a lot to be proud of.  Despite all of the challenges from mother nature like hail, cool temperatures and wet conditions, this year's sugar beet crop will go into the record books.  Area Ag Manager Jerry Darnell shares the great news.

This year Western Sugar will average approximately 30.7 ton per acre.  Darnell says throughout the four-state cooperative yields are above last year's record breaking crop of 29.9 ton per acre.

Total sugar production will be down this year with nine percent fewer acres planted and lower sugar content produced from this year's crop.  Locally the Wyobraska crop will average 29.3 ton per acre with 15.3 percent sugar and a 1.37 SLM.  Through the campaign, the Scottsbluff factory will process 1.4 million tons of sugarbeets through the last week of February.

Torrington Trainer Wins Mustang Million Competition
2013-12-05T04:46

There is great incentive for trainers from across the country to train mustangs.  There are growing number of events featuring Bureau of Land Management Mustangs.   In some competitions, trainers draw for their horse.  In this year's Mustang Million, trainers picked out their mustang.  Tom Hagwood of Torrington is one of the trainers who attended in mustang auction in Oregon last April.

That day a five year sorrel mustang with four white stocks stood out from the others.  Hagwood liked his conformation, how the gelding moved and how he carried himself.  That day he decided to buy "Merv" and begin the four and a half month training process for the Mustang Million competition.  The training process began with ground work. By the 5th day, Hagwood says it was time to start riding his mustang prospect.

Over the next four and half months, Hagwood worked with Merv daily to give him a lot of experiences.

In September the team traveled to Fort Worth, Texas to compete in the Mustang Million competition. In the preliminaries they competed in horsemanship, trail and reining.  The top 20 mustangs move onto the finals.  Hagwood says part of the competition is the compulsory, where riders have 90 seconds to complete a reining pattern.

The other part of the finals is a freestyle competition.  Hagwood felt it would likely come down to him and the 2012 winner Bobby Kerr, which is know for creative stunts like having his horse sit down in a car and driving around the arena.  Hagwood had a plan to show he has a solid horse.

Hagwood began his performance by dragging a wooden see-saw platform out into the area, then rode Merv onto the object, where Hagwood stood up on top of the saddle, waved around a tarp that said "Merv", then Hagwood sat back down into the saddle, then they walked off the platform to show off Merv's ability to spin.  After a few circles and flying lead changes, a steer comes running out into the arena, then they proceeded to rope the steer.

In the end, Hagwood and Merv finished on top by a 13 and half point lead winning over $200 thousand dollars, plus a brand new 2014 Dodge truck.  Hagwood and his horse Merv recently won the Mustang Million Competition.  This year they showed how impressive a well broke cow horse can be.
