Nichols wins district title for Bridgeport; Mitchell qualifies five
Brandon Nichols of Bridgeport won a district title and Mitchell turned in the top area team performance Saturday at the C4 District Wrestling Tournament at Valentine.
Nichols moved his record to 36-2 on the season winning the 138 pound title with a pin at the 3:32 mark against Andrew Abramson of Loomis/Bertrand.
Nichols will be joined by teammate Dakota Swires at the state tournament in Omaha next week. Swires finshed fourth at 126 and will take a 22-6 record to Omaha.
Bridgeport ended up 13th in the 16 team field. The top finish for an area team was by Mitchell. The Tigers finished fourth with 112 points. They qualified five individuals for Omaha next week.
For the Tigers Drew Gilliland finished second at 106. He lost 11-to-7 in the championship match to Alex Cantral of Kearney Catholic. Gilliland will head to state with a sparkling 33-6 record.
Also finishing second for the Tigers was 170 pounder Brendan Swanson. The senior was pinned at the 3:25 mark in the finals by Thomas Connely of Kearney Catholic. Swanson will take a 20-3 record to state.
Tiger Freshman Brandon Wiedeman also captured a second at 182. He was pinned in the title match by Josh Coyle of West Holt at the 4:26 mark. Wiedeman will go to Omaha with a 24-8 record.
Also qualifying for Mitchell, Josh Zulkoski finished fourth at 120 and Spencer Rien was third at 220.
Gordon/Rushville will send three wrestlers to state. Garrett Shadbolt finished second at 113, Casey Glassgow was fourth at 138 and Ken Graham was fourth at 170.
