Mayo: Will only consider County police under elected offical
Gering Mayor Ed Mayo says he could support a countywide law enforcement agency, but with conditions. The Scottsbluff council re-opened talks regarding police consolidation Tuesday night when they directed staff to research possible merging of Police services with the county.
Mayo says he would consider a countywide agency that involves only an elected official and not an appointed Police Commissioner or some other entity that is not accountable to the electorate.
Mayo agrees with Scottsbluff Mayor Randy Meininger that the countywide agency would need to be efficient, provide continuity, put more people on the street and provide better overall service. Like Meininger and County Board Chair Mark Masterton, Mayo said the administrative structure will be ironed out in joint discussions.
Mayo says Gering will move ahead with plans to hire a new Police Chief during the conversations, and then change their intent if progress is made.
