Zephyrs sweep Laramie
The WESTCO Zephyrs matched-up with Laramie for the second time in nine days Tuesday night at Cleveland Field. The Zephyrs topped the Rangers 7-3 in a nine-inning game in Laramie July 1 and followed it up with a doubleheader sweep last night, 5-0 and 11-2.
Eric Moreno was nearly perfect in game one. He fired a one-hitter while striking out 13 on the way to his ninth win of the season. The only Laramie baserunner was Chance Jones, who had a two out single in the fifth.
The Zephyrs scored all the runs they needed with a three run third. Mark Moran's crew took advantage of wildness by the Laramie pitching staff. Ty Benson led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to third on a double by Tharyn Curtis, then Ty Dunkel and Beau Lofink were both hit by pitches, scoring Benson.
WESTCO added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to wrap up the scoring.
Benson started the second game for the Zephyrs and Laramie jumped on the unbeaten pitcher for a first inning run on two hits, but the
Zephyrs bounced right back with a two run bottom of the inning and never looked back.
The Z's had back to back four run third and fourth innings to pull away. Benson moved to 4-0 on the year, while the Zephyrs improved to 30-11 with a nine game win streak.
The Zephyrs have four games scheduled in Colorado this weekend to close out their regular season. They return home July 19 to host the Area Tournament. The Z's are the number one seed. They will play Hastings in a first round game that night at 7:30 p.m. The opening game is second seeded Kearney vs North Platte at 4:00 p.m.
