Gering tops Sidney
Gering Platte Valley Companies moved to 2-0 on the senior legion baseball season with a 7-2 win over Sidney Friday night during the opening day of play of the PVC Tournament.
Sidney also dropped a 7-2 decision Friday to the Buckley Bombers. They also lost a 7-2 game to the WESTCO Zephyrs Thursday at Cleveland Field to drop to 0-4 on the season.
In Friday's game with Gering Sidney was thwarted by Grant Rimington, who struck out 10.
Outfielder Walker Britsch was the hitting star for Gering. He had two of Gering's four hits. He also scored two runs. The home team put the game away early with a single tally in the bottom of the first inning and four more in the second. They closed out their scoring with two runs in the sixth.
Sidney scored single runs in the third and seventh.
Gering will face Buckley at 8 p.m. Saturday. Buckley is 1-1 in tourney play with a 9-0 loss to North Platte Friday.
Other games Saturday have Chadron against North Platte at 12:30 p.m., Sidney vs. Chadron at 3:00 p.m. and Sidney against North Platte at 5:30 p.m.
On Sunday Gering will play North Platte at 10:00 a.m and Chadron at 12:30 p.m.
Gering will play tonight without Zach Smith and Nate Marquez, who will play in the Panhandle Prep All-Star Basketball Games. They are also without Danny O'Boyle who is at the Shrine Bowl football camp preparing for next Saturday's game.
The Platte Valley Companies Tournament isn't the only one in town. The WESTCO Zephyrs are hosting their NTC Tournament today and Sunday.
There are four games scheduled today, with the Zephyrs playing at 10:00 a.m. against Torrington and at 7 p.m. against Widefield, CO. The Zephyrs will also play Wheatland Sunday at 1 p.m.
Zephyrs coach Mark Moran has a chance to pick-up his 700th career win with the team this weekend. The 21st year head coach sits at 699 career wins after the Thursday win against Sidney.
