Mayo: City "not squeezed by any timeline" to hire Police Chief

Gering Mayor Ed Mayo says the city is not squeezed by any timeline to hire a Police Chief. Mayo says the city is just "crossing the t's and dotting the i's" before starting the civil service commission process and offering the Police Chief job initially to just internal candidates.

Mayo says there are a number of qualified supervisory people within the Police Department to become Police Chief.

Mayo says it is best for the city to hire someone from within the department. Mayo says by hiring internally, it would provide the Police Department continuity and a person who knows what needs to be changed.

The city's current captains, George Holthus and James Rogers, have been leading the department since the resignation of long-time Chief Mel Griggs at the end of February.
