Cougars blanked in the desert

PHOENIX -- South Mountain Community College scored five early runs and registered a 9-0 win over Western Nebraska Community College Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix.

The Cougars, who are coming off a big Empire Conference win against Lamar 10-8 in 11 innings on Sunday, couldn't put together hits in suffering the loss on the start of their Spring Break trip. WNCC and South Mountain each finished with nine hits apiece.

South Mountain, who received votes this week in the NJCAA Division I national polls, received a strong pitching performance from Jared Mattera, a transfer from the University of Arizona. Mattera scattered nine hits in walking just one and striking out eight.

WNCC countered on the mound with Felix Ojeda-Sanchez, who went six innings in scattering eight hits, five of which came in the first two innings. After the second inning, Ojeda-Sanchez settled down.

The Cougars had a couple of innings where they had more than one runner on the base paths. The third inning saw the Cougars had two on to lead the innings, but both were stranded. WNCC also had two singles from Gabriel DeLa Rosa and Mason Cratty before a double play stopped the rally.

WNCC"s best chance to score came in the seventh where the Cougars loaded the bases with singles from Taylor Ericson, Tyler Pollock, and Matt Zilla, but another double play stopped the rally.

Zilla, Pollock, and DeLa Rosa each had two hits for the Cougars.

WNCC (1-10-1) will be back in action today in Phoenix when they play Arizona Western and Phoenix College.
