Jury finds Tharp guilty on all counts

A Scotts bluff County District Court jury has returned guilty verdicts on four charges against a 48 year old Scottsbluff man who was accused of threatening to shoot his girlfriend during a domestic dispute in April of this year.

District Judge Randall Lippstreu read the verdicts as John Tharp was found guilty one count of terroristic threats, one count of 3rd degree assault, and two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Court documents said the victim called police after she said Tharp had assaulted her and threatened to kill her as he put a gun to her head while she was leaving her home. The documents say the dispute began after Tharp said he thought the victim would cheat on him while he would be out of state to visit his son in Rhode Island. The victim told police Tharp choked her and threatened to shoot her when he jumped into her car while she was attempting to leave the home.

Police recovered two weapons from the home, including a black powder handgun alleged to have been used in the assault.

Sentencing has tentatively been set for Wednesday, October 23rd at 1 p.m.
