Brazen, random vandalism shocks Mitchell

Brazen, random acts of vandalism in Mitchell early Sunday morning caused at least an estimated $10,000 in damage and Police Chief Mike Cotant says he expects it to go much higher. Cotant says the vandalism was in every area of town, with reports of dozens of tires being slashed on vehicles, and many items taken from homes and smashed on the streets.

Cotant says holiday flags were destroyed and even a 200 pound concrete planter was taken and smashed on the street. He says an elderly woman's screens were cut and her telephone lines cut. Cotant says they believe the vandalism occurred between 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. soon after the night patrolman had gone home.

Cotant says it appears every street has damage but no one has reported hearing anything or seeing anything to this point. Cotant is still receiving reports of damage and asks anyone who saw or heard anything to call the Scotts Bluff County Communications Center at 436-6666 or Crimestoppers at 632-STOP with any information you may have.
