Creighton has runaway in sellout opener
OMAHA, Neb. -- Doug McDermott scored 20 points in 20 minutes to lead five players in double-figures as Creighton men's basketball opened up the 2013-14 season with a 107-61 win over Alcorn State on Friday night. The 107 points was tied for the eighth-most points in school history, and most ever in a season opener.
The game was played before a sellout crowd of 17,740, the largest season-opening home crowd in program history and ninth-largest ever.
In addition to McDermott's 20, also in double-digits for CU was Devin Brooks (15), Ethan Wragge (15), Jahenns Manigat (13) and Will Artino (12).
Alcorn State was paced by 16 points form Octavius Brown and Twann Oakley.
McDermott was honored prior to the game as Creighton's all-time leading scorer, then hit lay-ups on each of the first three possessions to spearhead a Bluejay offense that sank its first five shots. CU led 16-7 after a corner three-pointer by Ethan Wragge, only to have ASU rally to take a 23-22 lead at the midpoint of the first half.
The Jays would respond with a 12-0 burst, getting four points each from McDermott and Artino, and would not be threatened again. CU led 52-33 at the break, led by 18 points from McDermott.
A halfitme pep talk helped Creighton clamp down defensively in the second stanza, which saw the Jays outscore the Braves 25-4 in the first 9:32. Key in the burst was a 16-0 run capped by a Zach Hanson hoop inside that made it 77-40.
Creighton broke the 100-point milestone on a Brooks free throw with 2:29 left. The Bluejay lead would reach as large as 51 points on two occasions before settling for the 107-61 margin.
Creighton shot 55.6 percent from the field, including 11-of-24 from downtown and 26-of-36 at the line. CU won the rebound battle 45-26 and owned 25 assists on 35 baskets while owning just six turnovers. The Bluejays outscored the ASU bench 54-16, 33-2 off turnovers and 17-2 on the break.
Creighton returns to action on Monday night with a 7:02 pm contest vs. UMKC (0-1).
