Grant for McKinley school project close to being verified

Twin Cities Development Executive Director Rawnda Pierce says the final steps are almost complete for state verification of a $465,000 state grant to build affordable single family homes on the block that includes McKinley School.

The Gering city council Monday night approved guidelines for first-time homebuyers and an environmental review on the project is expected to be completed soon. The grant will provide money so five homes can be built over the next three years on the north and east end of the block.

Money from the sale of the homes will be used to demolish the 100 year old school. Eventually 10 homes in the $120,000 to $135,000 range are planned to be constructed on the one square block area purchased by the city from Bill Brashear last November.

Applications to own one of the homes can be made to the city of Gering or Twin Cities Development.
