Strange rail things

A man who was standing near the BNSF railroad track at 1st Avenue in Scottsbluff has been taken into custody by Scottsbluff Police after he called a relative and indicated he was going to stand on the tracks and take his own life.

Captain Brian Wasson says Police identified the man as the person the caller was concerned about. Wasson says a train was approaching as Police made contact with the man around 2:20 this afternoon. Wasson says the caller had indicated the man was going to stand at either the Broadway or 5th Avenue crossing.

Wasson says the man is a local resident, was not injured and was taken to Regional West Medical Center. Police are continuing their investigation.

At about the same time, a Union Pacific train uncoupled as it was going through Gering, closing all the rail crossings except for Country Club Road. Police have indicated the train lost the air that operates the brake system and they are trying to resolve that so the eastbound train can move on.
