Gering school board approves contracts for office purchase, new superintendent

The Gering school board Monday evening approved a $295,000 contract for the purchase of the Western Heritage Credit Union offices in downtown Gering. The offices will be the new home of the District's administrative staff.

The board, with two members absent, voted 3-1 to approve the contract, with B.J. Peters voting no. Peters has maintained throughout the discussion that the board has other educational priorities that need to be filled before moving the administrators to new offices.

But Board Chair Alan Doll says the current 40 year offices underneath Memorial Stadium are inadequate, that the new space does not need remodeling and comes with furnishing, and that it was purchased for $50 per square foot, well below the market rate. He also says the district can be good neighbors with the merchants located downtown.

The closing date is March 15th and the plan is to move into the new facility in April.

In other action, the board Monday night also approved a three year contract with new superintendent Bob Hastings at an annual salary with benefits of $167,000. Doll says staff and the community remain excited about Hastings' arrival and he expects one of the big benefits will be an upgrade in technology throughout the district.
