Convicted felon files tort claim aginst local governments
A Scottsbluff man convicted of receiving illegal drugs through the mail has filed notice he intends to sue four local governments and the WING Drug Task Force for hail damage caused to his impounded vehicle.
The Star Herald says 22 year old Andrew Vanderveen, who is serving three years probation for the criminal offense, claims in a tort claim filed with the city of Scottsbluff that he will file suit against Scottsbluff, the city of Gering, Scotts Bluff County, the state of Nebraska and the task force.
The complaint says following his arrest, Vanderveen's car was impounded at a lot owned by the city of Gering after Scottsbluff Police arrested his girlfriend Sarah Trook, who was stopped while driving the vehicle.
A hailstorm occurred in mid-June and Vanderveen claims the car received $7,000 in damages while it was in the lot.
Vanderveen claims the defendants should have protected his vehicle from the elements and is asking for damages over $10,00, including loss of use and enjoyment of his car.
