More long balls and more wins for the Cougars

Duran breaks home run record

Bianca Duran broke the career home run record, notching her 32nd and 33rd home runs and Kasey Cash eclipsed the season home run record as the 18th-ranked Western Nebraska Community College Cougars to a sweep over Southeast Community College in Beatrice

In the opener, Duran and Shelby McGraw combined to shut down the Storm while the Cougar offense finished with 12 hits, including three home runs for the 10-3 win.

The second game saw the Cougars blast five home runs as Duran blasted a 3-run sixth-inning shot to break the career record in a 9-6 win over the Storm. In that same game, Cash's first-inning 2-run shot gave her 20 on the year and broke the season home run record of 19.

WNCC controlled the opener from the get-go, jumping out to an 8-0 lead after two innings. The Cougars scored five times in the first. Duran led off the game with a solo home run. Two batters later, Jennifer Cottle rocketed a 2-run blast. Later, Danielle Hearn and Kayla Romey each singled in runs for a 5-0 lead.

The Cougars plated three more runs in the second as McGraw belted a 2-run homer. WNCC added a single run in the third on a Duran runs-scoring double for the 9-0 lead.

WNCC pounded out 12 hits in the contest, including seven extra base hits. Duran went 2-for-5 from her lead-off spot, driving in two and scoring once with her double and home run. McGraw finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, three runs scored, and a home run, while Hearn had two hits with two RBIs.

Duran picked up the win, going four innings in scattering three hits and striking out five. McGraw tossed the final three innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

The second game was a battle. WNCC took a 3-0 lead in the first on Cash's 2-run homer and then a solo shot by Mariah Shepherd. The Storm battled back, scoring once in the third and four more in the fifth to grab a 5-3 lead.

WNCC responded from the deficit with a four-run sixth inning. Lindsey Shiels-Brophy started the rally with a one-out home run followed by Duran's 3-run bomb. to put the Cougars up 7-5.

The Storm added a run in the sixth, but WNCC added two insurance runs in the seventh off of a McGraw 2-run home run.

WNCC pounded out 10 hits in the contest. Duran, Hearn and Romey each had multiple hits. Duran went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Hearn had a double, while Romey had a run scored.

RaVae Herrera picked up the win, while Duran recorded the save. Herrera went five innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and striking out three. Duran tossed the final two innings, striking out three and allowing two runs and a run.

WNCC, 42-8, return to action Sunday when they travel to Salina, Kan., to face Sterling College and Friends College.
