Gorsuch an early leader in Denver

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 17, 2013) --- The 2013 rodeo season has just gotten underway with two former world champions making a good start at this year's National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

In the steer wrestling, Dean Gorsuch, from Gering, Neb., took the early lead with a 4.2 second run. Gorsuch won world titles in 2006 and 2010. He is a seven-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier looking to make it eight. Getting off to a good start here in the Denver Coliseum would certainly help him accomplish that goal.

In the bull riding, three-time world champion J.W. Harris from Mullin, Texas, rode Burns Rodeo's Shredder for 86 points. Harris won world titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he finished second to Shane Proctor and then in 2012 finished second again behind Cody Teel.

Last year, he had to sit out the early season because of injuries and couldn't come to Denver. Harris set a goal a long time ago of beating Donny Gay's record of eight bull riding championships and is hoping to jump start his season with a good win here.

Both of these men have their second round appearances here on Friday at the matinee performances. Each of the rodeo events features two full rounds of competition. Then, scores and times will be added together with the top 12 advancing to the final round on Jan. 27 in hopes of winning a National Western Stock Show Rodeo title.

There are two performances featuring competitors from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women's Professional Rodeo
