Twisters win Colorado/Wyoming state title

First Nebraska state champs...now add Colorado and Wyoming

Make it two state titles covering three states for the Twisters. The 16 & Under girls softball team, comprised of players from eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska, wrapped up the Colorado/Wyoming title Sunday in Loveland with a 7-1 win over Explosion Two.

A week after winning the Nebraska state title in Hastings, the Twisters swept through the latest state tournament, winning five straight games. In the championship contest the Twisters used a four-run third to catapult them to their eighth tournament win of the season.

Marisa Santos and Cassandra Bustillos lead off with back-to-back singles, then promptly pulled off a double steal of second and third and then scored on a single by Isabel Thompson.

Not to be outdone by her teammates, Thompson proceeded to steal second and third and scored on a bunt single by Sofia Fox. Fox was thrown out trying to steal, but Jessica Rogers followed with a double. She came around to score the fourth run of the inning on a single by Shaylee Rickard.

Thompson and Barbara Calvert led the Twisters with two rbi each, while Raile Riley, Rogers and Santos all had two hits each for the champs.

Rickard pitched a six-inning complete game four hitter, striking out six.

The Twisters entered play this weekend with a 41-game win streak and a 62-5 record. The No. 2 nationally ranked ball club won four games in the tourney Saturday, including a thrilling 10-4 win over NC Force. The game was tied at 3-3 entering the seventh inning when the Twisters exploded for seven runs.

The Twisters have two more tournaments scheduled. They will go national for those. The USSSA World Series is in Tulsa, Oklahoma and ASA Nationals in Pekin, Illinois July 25th and August 1st respectively.
