Elkhorn South wins Class B Track and Field Title
A 21-point outburst by Elkhorn South in the final two track events was enough for the Storm to overtake the defending champion Scottsbluff Bearcats and win the 2013 Class B Boys State Track and Field Championship in Omaha Saturday.
Elkhorn South ended up with 59.5 points compared to Scottsbluff's 55.
The title came down to the 1600 Relay. The Storm finished second to score eight points, while the Cats were blanked, finishing 12th.
McCook was also in the title hunt. They had 51 points entering the final relay, but they failed to score finishing 10th.
The run for Elkhorn South started in the preceding 200 finals. Jake Nelson scored 10 points for his team winning the event. Teammate Keaton Suey added three more points by finishing sixth.
Both Nelson and Suey ran legs on the 1600 relay.
Two panhandle teams did score points in the relay, in fact Alliance won it. Their team was comprised of Mitch Pancost, Keagon Hill, Cody Robinson and Gaige Lehl.
The Gering Bulldogs finished fifth with a team of Ryan Schwartzkopf, Austin Dolberg, Dillon De Mott and Aaron Pierce.
Even though Scottsbluff didn't come away with a second straight state title they had some good performances. The 3200 relay team won to open the meet Friday.
Weight man Jonathan Maag captured to silver medals with second place finishes in both the shot put and discus. Luke Worden, who will join Maag on the South Dakota football team next fall, got a fourth for the Cats in the 100.
Matt Klein, who earlier in the week signed a track scholarship to Chadron State, got a third for the Cats in the 110 hurdles and an eighth in the 300 IM's.
Junior Matthew Barraza finished a stellar state meet with a fifth place finish in the 1600 Saturday.
Kelsy Wood of Hemingford turned in outstanding effort in her final high school meet. She finished second to Kearney Catholic's Kalyn Brannagan in both hurdles finals. Brannagan established a new Class C state record in the 300 low hurdles.
Wood also got a fourth place finish in the 100 finals. On Friday she got a seventh in the long jump.
