Panhandle Teams Exit Early At Boys State


All three panhandle teams had a early exit at the boys state high school boys basketball tournament Thursday in Lincoln. In class D2 Falls City Sacred Heart defeated Leyton 58-50. The Warriors lead after the first quarter 12-8, but Falls City Sacred Heart stormed back in the second quarter to take a lead into halftime 31-16. The second quarter would be the difference for Leyton for the Warriors would never be able to recover. Leyton's season ends with a record of 18-6.

In a game heard on 94.1 The Brand, in class C2 the Kimball Longhorns lost to Freeman 49-46. Longhorns and Falcons were dead locked at 22-22 going into halftime. Freeman would outscore the Longhorns in the third quarter 15-14 for a 37-36 lead after three quarters. Going into the final stanza the Falcons would again outscore Kimball by two, 12-10 to hang on for the win. Kimball was lead in scoring by Mike Daum with 28 points and Jake Reader chipping in with 14. The Longhorns season ends with a record of 22-4.

Also on 94.1 The Brand, the third team from the panhandle would be the Scottsbluff Bearcats in Class B with Omaha Skutt winning 58-49. The Skyhawks would have a 19-13 lead after the first quarter, but then the Bearcats would crank it up with a 20-7 second quarter lead by 14 first half points from Dillon Hernandez. Unfortunately for the Cats Hernandez would not score in the second half as Skutt would outscore the Bearcats in the third quarter 15-10 and again in the fourth quarter 17-6. Other scorers for Scottsbluff was Trent Harris with 13, Landon Walker 7, Matt Mickey 5, Dru Kuxhausen 6, and Jackson Hinze 4. Scottsbluff's season ends with a record of 16-9.

Semi final games will take place today in Lincoln with all the championships to be played Saturday from Pinnacle Bank Arena. All the championship games will be televised on NET.
