Eagles win opener

DICKINSON, N.D. – Grant Stone sank five 3-pointers and scored 20 points and the Chadron State College men's basketball team got its season off to a fine start with its 89-76 victory over Dickinson State Friday.

"It's always nice to start the season off with a win, especially on the road," Chadron State head coach Brent Bargen said. "We played well tonight and our depth really showed up."

While Stone paced the Eagles, he didn't have to carry all the scoring load. Zac Bargen, who will also play in Saturday's football game against Fort Lewis, added 15 points and Christopher Smith added 14.

Evan Brooks finished with nine points off three 3-pointers and Kendrick Holliman and Chris Taylor both scored six points. Taylor also had eight defensive rebounds and finished with 12 in the game.

In all, 11 Eagles scored and they shot 53.6 percent from the field for the game.

The Blue Hawks hit 49 percent of their shots but turned the ball over 22 times. A big reason for the Blue Hawks' ball control woes was the spirited defense from Chadron State. Josiah Lee had four steals, Smith added three more and the Eagles wound up with 19 total.

Chadron State will play Thursday at Grace University in Omaha. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (CDT)
