2013 Monument Valley Iris Show results
Scottsbluff - The 2013Monument Valley Iris Show is in the books and it was an outstanding show considering the weather according to organizers. LeRoy Meininger of Mitchell, Stanley Haas of Scottsbluff and Gretchen Deter of Gering were the overall winners. LeRoy Meininger had the Best of Show iris in the horticulture division with a light pink boarder bearded iris named "Be my Baby". Deter was awarded Best of Show in the artistic division with an arrangement in the novice class, "a calendar full of iris" theme. Haas exhibited the best of show in the photography division.
The show held Saturday and Sunday June 1st and 2nd at the Monument Mall in Scottsbluff wasn't as large as last year but was an excellent quality show. It attracted 200 total entries. The horticultural division included 162 entries and there were 19 arrangements and 19 entries in the photographic section.
The bloom season for iris has been a week late this year and we have had our share of wind but the iris were in better shape than we expected according to LeRoy Meininger horticultural division chairman. Attendance included over 400 spectators coming out to view the iris in the show.
Monument Valley Iris Society President Vern Fegler said this was an excellent show under the circumstances. He said even though the season was late, it has been a wonderful bloom season for iris in western Nebraska.
Runners up in the horticultural section were "High Priestess" shown by Stanley Haas and "Royal Sterling" shown by Vern Fegler of Gering. Stanley Haas was awarded the Sweepstakes award for the most blue ribbon iris exhibits.
People's choice awards went to Vern Fegler with "Futerist" in the horticulture division, People's choice awards went to Gretchen Deter with her "Spring Time" arrangement in the artistic division and Stanley Haas in photography.
