Fischer: Required sequestration cuts should be easy to achieve

Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer says it should be easy to achieve the spending restrictions required by the so-called "sequester" that will take effect Friday. The legislation requires $85 billion in automatic spending reductions in military and domestic spending that many say would have a negative impact on the nation's security and economy.

Fischer says all it requires is responsible budget cuts that would amount to 2.5% of the $3.5 trillion federal budget. Fischer says it should be something that is a catalyst to making the country more efficient.

Fischer says she sent a letter Tuesday to Ag secretary Tom Vilsack about the possible furloughing of meat and poultry inspectors as part of the automatic cuts. Fischer says Vilsack should look at cuts in travel in other areas rather than threaten to impact the nation's meat supply with meat inspector furloughs.
