Gering pulls out overtime win at Chadron
The Gering High Bulldogs scored the first 20-points of the game Friday night. Chadron scored the next 26, but Gering was able to come back and pull out a 27-26 overtime win at Chadron.
Gering fell behind the football game for the first time in overtime as Chadron's Keenan Johnson scored on a six-yard run on the third play of the overtime, but Jayden Stack missed the extra point and the door was left open for the Bulldogs.
Senior running back Gage Smith took matters into his own hands on Gering's overtime possession. He took a direct snap on all four plays and scored from the one on the final one to tie the score. It was a close call as it took the officials a long time to signal touchdown. Smith then added the extra point to give Gering's its first win of the season. Chadron dropped to 0-2 with its second consecutive one-point loss.
Gering opened the scoring early in the first quarter with a three-yard run by Smith. It capped a 37-yard drive after the Bulldogs recovered a Chadron fumble.
Gering went up 14-0 with a score on the third play of the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Austin Hoffman completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to senior Justin Brester.
Gering went into halftime with that 14-0 cushion and quickly made it a three touchdown lead on the first play of the third quarter. Brester scored a defensive touchdown, scooping up an errant pitch attempt and running in seven yards for the score. Smith missed the extra point and it stood 20-0 Gering eight seconds into the third quarter.
From that point on Chadron dominated the contest. T.D. Stein put the hosts on the board with a 69-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Dickerson. Stein hit Dickerson in stride to put the Cardinals on the board with 2:46 to go in the third quarter.
Stein connected on another touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, this one to Stack covering 15-yards. That made the score 20-14 with 8:59 to go. Then came a 40-minute lightening delay.
When play resumed Chadron shutdown the Gering offense and got the ball back on offense. They scored the tying touchdown with just 2:36 to go on a three yard quarterback sneak by Stein, but Chadron's chance to win went wide left on the extra point to set up overtime.
