"Strange circumstances" regarding Chugwater fire being investigated
Chugwater, Wyoming Fire Chief Tim Ash says the investigation continues into the "strange circumstances" that caused a fire that destroyed the only gas station in the small town in Platte County.
Horton's Corner Store in Chugwater, which is 54 miles southwest of Torrington, was totaled when a car slammed through the main doors of the building Sunday night, resulting in a fire that engulfed the building in flames.
The driver of the car says he lost control of the the vehicle on the ice before it entered the store. But Ash says his department and state investigators are determining whether the car caught fire before or after it entered the store and why there was so much combustion.
Ash says the car narrowly missed two employees at the front counter. A local resident was also inside at the time. Ash said the employees were able to shut things off and save money and valuable papers before exiting.
Ash says the pumps were not impacted and the owners have talked about rebuilding, but until something temporary is arranged, the community is without a gas station.
