Former Sidney child care provider found guilty of child abuse

A Sidney woman charged with child abuse in the alleged abuse of a 2-month-old at her in-home day care has been found guilty after a week long trial in Cheyenne County District court

56-year old Nancy Gipfert was charged with child abuse causing serious bodily injury, but the jury...after a week-long trial...found her guilty of the lesser charge of negligent child abuse. She will be sentenced on January 8th.

The case stemmed from an incident in September 2011 when the child was taken to the Sidney hospital by family members, then transported to a hospital in Denver.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services issued an emergency order two weeks later suspending Gipfert's child care license, but she was not arrested until May of last year.

An affidavit attached to the state license suspension order said that Sidney police indicated the child had been injured as a result of abusive head trauma and that doctors said the injuries occurred while the child was in Gipfert's care.

Gipfert will be sentenced January 8th.
