Bridgeport businessman Schmunk dies

The community of Bridgeport is mourning the loss of longtime businessman Alex Schmunk, Jr.

Schmunk, who owned Sonny's Super Foods in Bridgeport, Sidney, Cozad, and Hot Springs, South Dakota, died Friday morning at the age of 78, at Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport.

Schmunk, a Bayard High School graduate, and his wife of 56 years, Vonnie, moved to Bridgeport in 1959, when they started the Bridgeport 66 Station. In 1967, they started a Chrysler dealership, which later became Bridgeport Ford.

The Schmunks started Sonny's Super Foods in 1981, and have owned it ever since.

Schmunk's funeral is Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bridgeport.
