Guernsey Park Fire: 50 people evacuate from nearby homes

Officials say about 50 residents outside Hartville evacuated their rural homes due to the wildfire at Guernsey State Park but none used shelters that were set up.

Rocky Mountain Type II management team Beth Hermanson says they do expect to make significant progress on the fire today, but at the moment it is still only 20% contained. The fire has burned approximately 2,500 acres in rugged terrain. The fire started Saturday and hundreds of campers had to evacuate. The park remains closed.

Hermanson says people parking along some of the highways into Guersey State Park are being asked to avoid the area to help firefighters fight the fire.

Hermanson says if the fire did shift south all of a sudden, the additional traffic could cause some safety concerns.

Road closures include Wendover Road, Pleasant Valley Road to Highway 270, Lakeside Drive to Highway 270.
