District Title Tonight Scottsbluff vs Gering
It would be a understatement to say that Western Nebraska Community College's Cougar Palace won't have a capacity crowd tonight from Scottsbluff and Gering, as the Bearcats and Bulldog boys basketball teams meet for the fourth time this season for the B6 district championship. Last night in the semi-finals, Gering surged in the second half for a 60-48 win over McCook to advance to tonight's finals. Both teams went into the locker room at half dead locked at 21. It was the second win of the season for Gering over McCook, as the Bulldogs defeated the Bison in the East/West Shootout on Feburary 14th 65-39. The Bulldogs win as the number one seed over the Bison was the first district win for Randy Plummer as head coach at Gering. With the loss, McCooks season ended with a 15-11 record. Christian Groskopf and Riley Haug lead Gering in scoring with 13 points each. Haug ignited Gering in the second half scoring all of his points. Haug was KNEB's Taco John's Player of the Game.
In the second game of the night at WNCC, featured the fourth meeting of the year between Sidney and Scottsbluff. The Bearcats defeated the Red Raiders in the Western Conference tournament 63-41, in the fifth place game. Sidney would take both regular season meetings, at Scottsbluff on Feburary 1st 66-62, and in Sidney February 8th 56-54. Last night the Bearcats would get the game that counted the most defeating Sidney 57-50. The Red Raiders had a halftime lead of a back n forth game at 28-27. The conclusion of the third quarter had Sidney leading 41-35. Early in the fourth quarter Sindey had Scottsbluff on the ropes completing a three point play to power ahead 44-35. Scottsbluff rallied the troops and went on a 12-0 run to take the lead for good in the contest to advance to tonight's district final. Trent Harris was named KNEB's Taco John's Player of the Game, scoring 14 points to lead the way for the Bearcats.
The match up this evening with Scottsbluff and Gering will be the fourth of the year. The two would draw each other in the first game of the year in Gering to start the season on December 5th, with the Bulldogs winning 67-44 in the opening game of the Western Conference tournament. The regular season meetings would have out comes going both ways. The Bearcats would win in Scottsbluff on Jaunary 25th 65-52, while Gering would cap a undefeated season at home winning at GHS February 21st, 73-68. Gering enters tonight's game with a record of 19-5, meanwhile the Bearcats are 15-8. The way the NSAA power points are currently laid out, KNEB sports has the looser of tonight's game staying home with no chance to advance to the state tournament via a wild card spot. Tonight Scottsbluff will be searching for there fourth consecutive district title and trip to the state tournament. Gering will be looking for its first trip to state since 2012.
