Cougars take two at North Platte

NORTH PLATTE -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team blasted five home runs in capturing their 14th straight win with a doubleheader sweep over North Platte Community College Monday afternoon.



In the opener, Jessica Ball and Shelby McGraw each hammered two home runs each as the Cougars ran to a 17-6 win. The second game saw Lindsay Guymon record a home run and a double in helping the Cougars to the 9-1 win.


The first game saw WNCC put the game away quickly with six runs in the first and nine in the second for a 15-0 lead.


The first inning saw the Cougars score six runs on six hits. After Courtney Cloud and Angel Council led off with singles, McGraw blasted a 3-run home run. From there, WNCC added three more runs, including a 2-run single by RaVae Herrera, and a run-scoring double by Hannah Gonzales.


WNCC added nine runs in the second on seven hits. McGraw started the inning by getting her second home in as many innings with a 2-run shot over the centerfield fence. WNCC's offense stayed hot with a double by Gonzales, singles by Kelsey Bernhardt and McGraw, and a big 3-run home run by Ball.


North Platte added two runs in the third, but WNCC answered those two with two runs in the fourth. Council started the inning with a double and scored after Ball smacked her second home run of the game.


WNCC pounded out 17 hits in the win. Ball and McGraw had the hot bats, each finishing with five RBIs and going 3-for-4. Ball had three runs scored to go with her two home runs, while McGraw had her two home runs and two runs scored.


Also collecting multiple hits were Council, Alysa Linford, Gonzales, and Bernhardt each with two hits.


Madison Davis tossed five strong innings in scattering nine hits and giving up six runs. She also struck out five to only walking one.


The second game saw McGraw toss six strong innings in scattering three hits, striking out three and allowing a single run.


The offensive side saw WNCC finish with seven hits, but it the way they took advantage of base runners whether it was by walks or errors. The Cougars scored four in the second inning on just two hits. Emily Rust had a 2-run single and then later Ball had a run-scoring single.


WNCC added another run in the third on a run-scoring double by Herrera, before plating another run in the third for 6-0 lead. The Cougars finished off the came with a 3-run sixth inning on just one hit, a 2-run home run by Lindsay Guymon.


Guymon led the offense with a 2-for-3 game with a double, home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. Herrera had the other extra base hit. Cloud went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and hit by a pitch twice.


WNCC (25-7) will be back in action Friday when they host Otero Junior College in a Region IX conference game at Volunteer Field.
