Lady Cougars fall to Ft. Carson

COLBY, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team couldn't let a late second half lead hold up as the 15th-ranked Lady Cougars dropped a 68-64 contest to Ft. Carson Army Base on Friday in the second day of the Colby Classic.

Laurin Rivera and Ashley Stevens paced the Cougars with 18 points each, while Angela Vigil poured in 10 points.

WNCC head coach Dave Harnish said his team struggled shooting, converting just 2 of 16 3-pointers. The Cougars also turned the ball over 22 times.

WNCC trailed 38-27 at intermission and took their first lead of the contest with three minutes to play. After that short lead, Ft. Carson rebounded, regained the lead, and WNCC never could get back in front.

"We played like we did in the second half on Thursday [not well]," he said. "We get down early and we were down most of the second half. We didn't take the lead until with about three minutes to play. I was happy that we did come back to take a lead, but we gave it [the lead] right back to them."

The Cougars also received a near double-double from Abi Lujan with eight points and 10 rebounds. Stevens also pulled down nine rebounds.

WNCC (1-1) will be back in action Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. when they face Phoenix College. The Cougars will then return home for their first home contest on Wednesday when they face Central Wyoming College at 6 p.m.
