Heineman honored by Veterans' group; kicks off public awareness campaign

The National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs (NASDVA) announced the association's "Advocate of the Year" award to Gov. Dave Heineman, for his work on behalf of military service members, veterans and their families. NASDVA made the February announcement at a conference of state VA directors held in Alexandria, Va.

Among Nebraska's veterans outreach initiatives, NASDVA applauded Gov. Heineman for his involvement in publicizing the state's "Not One More Life!" campaign that brings public awareness to the growing problem of military and veteran suicides. The campaign will include bumper stickers promoting the crisis line, 1-800-273-TALK, and radio public service announcements. Heineman kicked off the state's campaign at a news conference Friday with military and veteran leaders.

State VA directors also credited Gov. Heineman for taking a personal interest in promoting the U.S. Chamber of Commerce "Hiring Our Heroes" program; a national initiative that encourages employers to hire veterans.
