Three CSC wrestlers qualify for nationals

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Three Chadron State College wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships by finishing in the top three of their weight class during the final day of the West Region hosted by Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo.

Dustin Stodola and Jordan DeBus both finished as runner-up and Michael Hill avenged an early season loss in the third place match at heavyweight to secure their spots in the championships March 14-15 in Cleveland.

Stodola, who entered the championship match with a 26-0 record, suffered a hard loss to San Francisco State's Isaiah Hurtado in the final seconds when Hurtado executed an escape late in the third period to eke out a 3-2 decision.

DeBus also suffered a difficult loss in the finals at 184 pounds when Western State's Kyle Piatt took him down in the first period of overtime to claim a 3-1 decision.

Hill, a junior from Lingle, Wyo., gutted out a 2-0 decision over national tournament qualifier Niko Bogojevic of CSU-Pueblo in the consolation semifinals to set up a match with Colorado Mesa University's Jordan Passehl for third place. Passehl, also a junior, defeated Hill 4-2 during their dual match in January but Hill never trailed in Saturday's tussle and won 6-2.

Earlier Saturday, Chadron State's CJ Clark, Caleb Copeland and Devan Fors were eliminated from the tourney following a loss in the consolation semifinals.

Clark suffered a narrow 2-1 decision to Colorado Mesa's Trevor Donarski at 157. Mesa's Chester Granard ended Copeland's season with a 6-2 decision at 174 and Cal Baptist's Caleb Gerl won by an 8-0 major decision over Devan Fors at 197.

Clark and Copeland both end the season with 17 victories and Fors had 11.

Western State won the 10-team regional tourney with a team score of 86.5. Chadron State finished seventh.
