Forest Service to revamp Chadron building

The U-S Forest Service has unveiled a roughly million dollar energy efficiency renovation project for the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands headquarters in Chadron. The building just north of the railroad tracks on North Main Street also houses the Pine Ridge Ranger District offices.

Supervisor Jane Darnell says the building...constructed in 1985 by the Chicago and NorthWestern Railroad as its district and coal operations headquarters...is the least energy-efficient Forest Service building in the agency's 5-state Region II.

Darnell says the renovation...primarily replacing the heating and cooling system with a geothermal heat pump...will achieve an 80% increase in energy efficiency while giving employees a healthier, safer, work place and public office environment.

The project will take about a year to complete, so to limit disruption of work most of the employees now there will move 3 miles south of Chadron to the former Ranger District offices...now the district worksite...on Highway 385 for the duration.

Some staffers remaining at the headquarters will actually move...starting in about a month...into a pair of mobile homes that have been put on the west side of the building. Darnell says the public will be encouraged to go out to the temporary Ranger District offices for visitor information services.
