No.2 Cougars win again
LAMAR, Colo. Â– The second-ranked Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team captured its 23rd straight victory with a sweep over Lamar Community College 25-11, 25-12, 25-15 on Friday night in Lamar, Colo.
The win was also the Cougars' 29th of the season and they pushed their set win streak to 39. The Cougars have not lost a match since falling to North Idaho College on Sept. 1.
Friday night, the Cougars pretty much controlled the tempo of the contest taking the first two sets pretty handedly. The third set was closer as both teams were tied at 7-7 early on before the Cougars decided to make their move and pushed the lead to 24-18 before Kacey Lafitaga served the final point.
A big key for the Cougars in the contest was their strong serving, where they tallied 11 ace serves. Morgan Broussard, Megan Johnson, and Lauren Knox all finished with two aces each.
Danika Youngblood led the Cougars with 11 kills and four digs. Broussard, the Gering High graduate, also tallied 28 set assists, three assist blocks, and six digs.
Also for the Cougars, Alex Rivera had 11 digs and six set assists; Kat Agson with two kills and two digs; Priscila Mendes with two kills and two digs; Yoro Tovar with five kills; Megan Johnson with three kills and two blocks; Lauren Knox with five kills and five digs; Lindsay Wehkamp with three kills and three blocks; Taylor VanderWerff with three blocks; Allora Tanner with three kills and a solo block; andTasha Meyer five digs.
WNCC, 29-2, will wrap up the 3-day southern Colorado road trip with a 1 p.m. contest against Trinidad State Junior College on Saturday. The Cougars will then return home for their final two home games when they face Northeastern Junior College on Oct. 19 on Think Pink night for Breast Cancer Awareness. They Cougars will wrap up the home campaign on Oct. 20 when they host Casper College in sophomore appreciation night.
