Ranta named player of the week

CHADRON – Wayne State and Chadron State have basketball representatives for Nebraska Division II players of the week.

Ranta, a 6-foot-0 forward from Rapid City, S.D., averaged 24 points, 10.3 rebounds and two steals in three games last week. She had two double doubles and became the second woman in school history to score at least 40 points in a game when she scored 40 in a win over Adams State. She also hit 20 free throws in that game to set a school record.

On the season, Ranta is averaging 16.5 points along with 7.9 rebounds per game.

Amry Shelby, a senior from Wayne State receives the men's honor, while Kattie Ranta, a junior from Chadron State, gathers the women's honor.

Shelby, a 5-11 guard from Marion, Iowa, was the lone Wildcat in double figures during both games last weekend as the Wildcats split Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home games against Concordia-St. Paul and No. 21 Minnesota State.

Shelby came through down the stretch for the Wildcats Friday night, scoring 11 of his 18 points in the final four minutes as WSC rallied from a 53-47 deficit to record a 61-55 win against Concordia-St. Paul. Shelby added 10 points Saturday night in a 66-54 loss to Minnesota State. For the weekend, Shelby, averaged 13.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
