Gilkey headed to Senior Bowl
Chadron State College's Garrett Gilkey is about to have a busier week than usual.
Gilkey, a 6-foot-7, 320-pound offensive lineman from Sandwich, Ill., who has been preparing for the NFL Draft at the prestigious IMG Academy in West Bradenton, Fla., was recently added to the South Roster of the 2013 Senior Bowl.
The Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., annually features the country's best senior collegiate football players and top NFL draft prospects. According to its website, over 800 general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, scouts and other NFL front office personnel attend Senior Bowl practices.
The game kicks off Saturday at 2 p.m. (Mountain Time) at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The game, as well as practices, which start Monday, will be televised by the NFL Network.
"This entire process has been unbelievable," Gilkey said. "I'm grateful for it and I'm fortunate to be involved with it. I proudly represent the Eagle on my helmet and I can't wait to stand out being the small school guy on that field."
Gilkey, who has recently been named to two All-America teams, is just one of nine players at the Senior Bowl who didn't play Division I football. Seven competed at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision level, while Brandon Williams, a defensive tackle from Missouri Southern, is the only other Division II player.
