WAPA substation problems caused power outage
A major power outage that darkened all of Box Butte County Monday evening for at least an hour Monday evening was caused by a problem in a Western Area Power Administration substation 15 miles west of Alliance. Alliance was without power for four and a half hours from around 8:15 a.m. until 1 a.m. while Hemingford's power was restored around 9 p.m.
After making repairs and energizing the Snake Creek substation, WAPA attempted to re-energize the entire system and discovered that the WAPA Alliance Substation located approximately 1 mile west of the City of Alliance on 10th Street, would not stay energized. The city says WAPA discovered one of the lightning arrestors for the Cody Substation had failed, which resulted in transferring the load to the other substations.
The process of re-energizing the Alliance grid was begun at approximately 12:00 a.m. and was completed at 12:45 a.m.
