6 wrestlers move on in Class D wrestlebacks
The second round of wrestle-backs for Classes A and D are done in a grueling day for wrestlers at the state championships at the Century Link Center in Omaha.
Eleven wrestlers from area teams entered the round, with five escaping with a chance to medal at the tournament.
For Bayard, three wrestlers picked up wins in the second round. Trenton Applegate picked up a win at 152. Applegate's 5-2 win over Jaylon Sturdivant of Morrill put him into the third round of consolations tonight with Makay Beck of Garden County. Chris Wurm pinned Clinton Fales of Anselmo-Merna in 4:47 at 285. Wurm has a third round consolation match tonight with Zachary Zaleski of Overton. Tristan Hunter defeated Shane Willats of Clearwater-Orchard, 8-2, at 170, and will wrestle Austin Roach of Laurel-Concord tonight.
Brandon Bowers was pinned in 4:07 by Brandon Kusek of Ravenna at 132, and Lane Kizzire was pinned in 3:46 by Garrett Sonderup of Fullerton at 145.
Bayard also has two wrestlers, Allen Denton at 160 and Tanner Willey at 195 who are in the semifinals tonight.
Morrill went two-for-three in the round with CJ Sidrow picking up a 6-1 win over Tanner Schunerle of Fullteron at 106 and Matthew Hessler pinned Tanner Hircock of Amherst in 1:11 at 285. Sidrow will wrestle Kevin Lineman of Alma and Hessler will wrestle Conner Albus of Pender tonight.
Garrett Zwiebel was pinned by Cale Bolton of High Plains Community in 2:40 at 138.
Hay Springs also had three wrestlers in the round, but only one picked up a win. Joey Johnson was a 2-1 winner over Lane Church of High Plains Community at 132. Johnson will wrestle Brandon Kusek of Ravenna tonight.
Chris Ray fell 4-3 to Tristan Hilton of Weeping Water at 120 and Levi Ray was pinned by Thomas Foster of Medicine Valley in 4:53 at 126.
Stevin Horrocks at 220 will wrestle in the semifinals tonight.
For Banner County, the only wrestler remaining is David Gifford, who will wrestle in the semifinals at 220.
The next round is the semifinals and third round consolations which begin at 4 p.m. Mountain Time tonight.
Bayard sits in the fifth place in team standings with 36.5 points, just two-and-a-half points behind East Butler.
