Early sugar beet harvest resumes; factory projected to open Thursday morning
Early sugar beet harvest has resumed but Western Sugar's Scottsbluff factory won't begin operating until Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
Ag Manager Jerry Darnell says muddy roads and fields as a result of this week's rain continues to set the harvest back. He says 50% of the early harvest comes from Box butte County and they received three to four inches of rain in the storm that left the area Monday afternoon.
Darnell says right now three producers are delivering beets from the Bridgeport area, using new European harvesters that can remove beets in muddy conditions. Darnell says good winds and higher temperatures forecast in the next 24 hours should help dry things.
