Gering citizens outline qualities for next superintendent

Gering school district patrons, students, administration and staff told a consultant assisting with the district's superintendent search that the next superintendent should be visionary with the understanding high achievement is expected with little in the way of a budget.

Marcia Herring, Director of the Superintendent search service for the Nebraska Association of School Boards, met with about a dozen district patrons Monday evening after holding internal meetings at the schools.

Herring says there was a strong emphasis from everyone on improving the curriculum and getting better results in assessments. There was also a stated need for improving technology while knowing the district has to operate on a tight budget. Herring says the other major concern was better communication between the superintendent and all the "stakeholders", including staff and the public.

The citizens also wanted someone approachable, decisive , and very visible in the schools and in the community. Herring says she and three other consultants will aggressively screen applicants to "verify their knowledge and experience".

Herring says the current timetable calls for the board to interview a minimum of four finalists the week of January 21st.
