Effort to retain county judgeship receives big boost
The effort to save the District 12 County Judgeship of Charles Plantz received a big boost Friday when a Nebraska Bar Association committee voted to recommend to retain it. Plantz, who served the northern tier counties in the panhandle, retired at the end of last year.
Scottsbluff Attorney Howard Olsen says the Bar Association's Judicial Resources Committee had previously recommended to move the judgeship to eastern Nebraska but changed their mind Friday during a conference call. Olsen says the decision is critical prior to the state's Judicial Resources Commission considering the vacancy next Tuesday because the committee is comprised of lawyers from across the state.
Olsen says the western Nebraska bar members told the committee they have agreed previously to reduce one district and one county judgeship, but the case load and travel required to serve the panhandle is too great for any other changes. Olsen says it is a matter of "reasonable access to justice".
