State volleyball gets underway Thursday

The Nebraska State High School Volleyball Tournament gets underway Thursday in Grand island.

The previous two years had Hastings co-hosting the event, but this year Grand Island is hosting the entire event. Grand Island High School, Central Catholic, Northwest and the Heartland Event Center will all host first round matches. Grand Island High School and the Event Center will host semifinal match-ups and the Event Center will entertain the championship games.

A run by Sidney in Class B would keep them at the Event Center all three days. The District 6 champ enters the tourney as the third seed and will play No. 6 Norris in a first round match at 6:30 p.m. CT Thursday. The Red Raiders are 25-6. Norris is 23-5.

Hometown Northwest is the No. 1 seed in Class B. The 32-2 Vikings will play 15-14 York in the first round at GIHS. Former Scottsbluff Bearcat Morgan Westphal is playing this year for the Vikings.

There is an interesting rematch in the Class C1 first round. Third seeded Chadron will tangle with No.6 Ogallala. The latter topped Chadron in the C1-6 District final last week. The Cardinals enter the tourney with a 27-3 record. Ogallala is 27-10. Chadron jumped off to an 18-0 start this season before suffering back-to-back losses to Sidney. Match time for the Cardinals and Indians is 4:00 p.m. CT at GIHS.

Leyton is in the Class D2 field as the No.4 seed. The 30-1 Warriors will tangle with fifth seeded Cedar Valley in a 4:00 p.m. CT match at GICC. Leyton suffered its only loss of the season in the D2-6 District final to Mullen. Cedar Valley is 24-6 on the year.

Mullen will play the final match of the day in Class D2. The No.7 seed will take on No. 2 Humphrey at 8:30 p.m. CT at GICC.

North Platte St. Pats, who topped Bridgeport in the C2-6 District final, earned the top seed in C2 and will play No. 8 Hershey in the opening round at 9:00 a.m. CT at Northwest. North Platte St. Pat's is 29-1 on the season. Hershey is 17-10 and earned a wild card after losing to St. Pat's in the sub-district. St. Pat's beat Hershey in three meetings during the season.
