Chauncey arraignment continued

The Scotts Bluff County District Court arraignment for a former Gering resident charged in the 2008 death of two year old Juliette Geurts has been continued until next Friday May 3rd at 1 p.m. 26 year old Dustin Chauncey is charged with manslaughter, felony child abuse resulting in death and providing false information to Police.

At what was expected to be his arraignment Thursday afternoon Chauncey decided not to waive his right to have 24 hours to read the information against him before appearing in court, which forced the setting of the new arraignment date. His attorney, Public Defender Bernie Straetker also indicated he might be filing pre-arraignment motions, although he did not say specifically what they would address.

Chauncey was brought into the courtroom through a side entrance as members of the group who filed the petition that resulted in Chauncey's indictment by a grand jury stood outside the courtroom waiting for him to enter through the normal front entrance. Security officers and deputies with the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's office were present in case there was a disruption

Chauncey, the child's mother Charyse Geurts and another male were in the Gering home when Charyse reported she found Juliette dead in her crib on July 11th, 2008. The case has been investigated as a homicide after the autopsy showed the child died of blunt force trauma
