USDA Relies on Producer Survey Responses to Administer Programs
Beginning today (Thursday) - USDA's National Agricultural Statistics will gather final information about the 2012 U.S. row crops. They will focus on harvested acreage - as well as crops produced and stored. A hog survey will capture current inventory figures. NASS is asking approximately 85-thousand producers across the country to respond to these important surveys involving corn, soybeans, sorghum, rice, cotton and hogs. Bob Bass - Director of the NASS Data Collection and Processing Center - says the responses to these surveys will be included in the County Agricultural Production Survey data and used in calculating county yields. USDA uses county yields to evaluate and administer vital farm disaster insurance programs - so Bass says producers should not underestimate the importance of their participation. NASS wants to hear from hog producers about their fall pig crop, farrowing intentions for the next six months and current inventory for the quarterly Hogs and Pigs report.
Bass stresses the importance and value of producer participation in these surveys. He says farm and ranch operators can help ensure the farm and insurance programs administered by USDA appropriately meet producer needs by provide complete and accurate data. Bass says the information collected can considerably help rural businesses, communities and industries. He urges producers to take the time to respond.
Many row crop and hog producers may have already received their surveys in the mail. The questionnaire can be completed using an easy and secure online system or filled out and mailed back. NASS representatives will contact producers who don't respond to help them complete the questionnaire by phone. The information collected is kept strictly confidential. NASS will not publish any individual's information. Survey results are only available in aggregate form.
