Pro Farmer W. Iowa corn crop results
The third day of the Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour is in the books. We get more from Leslie Smith.
Western Iowa's corn crop may look nice from the road, but the state of the crop is much more apparent in walking fields. On Wednesday crop scouts on the western leg of the Pro Farmer Crop Tour recorded 141 samples across the western third of the state. Pro Farmer Editor Chip Flory says scouts found a highly variable within fields.
Western Iowa's corn crop is showing good ear populations and yield potential, but Flory is concerned how this crop finishes the growing season.
Pro Farmer tour samples from western Iowa are ranging from 175.65 in the northwest to 160.12 in the southwest. That's up only slightly for the region's three year average which include the drought stricken crop of 2012.
Today the eastern leg of the Pro Farmer Crop Tour will samples fields in eastern and central Iowa. Iowa's final results will be released Thursday night when both legs of the crop meet in Rochester, Minnesota.
