US Beef Exports Softening

Cattle producers understand just how much important exports are to a producers bottom line. 2011 was a all-time record year for US Beef exports. Last year the United States had record year - with beef exports totaling five and half billion dollars -which was almost 30 percent larger than the year before. Export volume was also up 21 percent.

In a interview with KNEB/Rural Radio Network, US Meat Export Federation Assistant VP of International programs Greg Hanes says 2012 exports levels are struggling due to the limited beef supplies.

That higher value is directly tied to this year's record beef prices. Livestock Marketing Information Center Director Jim Robb says the downside of the good prices is there has been a pull back in beef exports.

Even with the limited supply and higher prices, Hanes believes the US is still price competitive with our main competitors - Australia and Brazil.

USMEF is forecasting exports volume will be down 12 percent this year, but the total value will be close to last year's numbers with US beef exports are on track to total 5 and half billion dollars this year. While exports may not be the market driver like last year they are still adding $213 dollars per head.

Both industry experts recently presented at the Southeast Wyoming Beef Production Convention in Torrington, Wyo.
