Kathleen Ann "Katy" Hawkins, 78

Kathleen Ann "Katy" Hawkins, 78, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at her home. Katy left a legacy to be proud of in terms of devotion to God, Family, Students, Community, and just standing up to what is right and just.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Scottsbluff with Fr. Kelsey Hogue and Fr. Robert Manasek officiating. A private family inurnment will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Memorials have been established to St. Francis Episcopal Church, Riverside Discovery Center, or Prairie Haven Hospice.

Katy was born October 20, 1933 in Milford, NE to Samuel and Verna (Dimmet) Kelley. She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln receiving her BA degree in Education. She married Jack Hawkins July 8, 1956 in Fairbury, NE. She taught at Scottsbluff High School, Gering High School, Hiram Scott College, and Western Nebraska Community College. She was active in theatre as musical drama director in Scottsbluff High School musicals, madrigal dinner, drama coach, wrote and directed the Oregon Trail Days Outdoor Musical, and served as a judge at speech & drama contests.

Katy served as a board member of the YMCA, North Platte Valley Museum, United Way, and St. Timothy's and St. Francis' Episcopal Church, and Riverside Zoological Society. She loved being involved in the American Field Service Exchange Program, Rotary Student Exchange program, Church Choir, Bible School director, altar guild, leader of Cub and Girl Scouts, Oregon Trail Days Old Settlers and Kiddies Parade committee, Riverside Zoo Docent program, PEO (past-president), Gering Band Parents (past President), Art Center, Clean Community, and hospital (volunteer).

Katy received many awards including FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer, Golden Spade Award, Panhandle Alumni of the Year University of Nebraska, Gering New Horizons Award of Excellence, and Riverside Zoo Volunteer Appreciation Award.

She is survived by her husband Jack, son Victor (Lori) Hawkins, Garden City, KS, daughter Kelley (Terry) Brown, Alliance, NE, grandchildren Jessica (Jake) Collins, Scottsbluff, NE, John Hawkins and Shane Hawkins, Garden City, KS, Brian Brown and Aaron (Brianna)Brown, Gillette, WY; great grandchildren Ryley, Madilyn, Ayden and Bailey Brown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Verna Kelley and sister Carolyn Huff.
