Sherman was born to Edward and Lucy (Fellows) Burkey, July 3, 1938, on the family farm. He was the youngest of thirteen children. Sherman went to a small country school just up the road from the farm until the 8th grade. The school was a place where he played cards with family and neighbors. Sherman married Sandra Alderman July 28, 1963. They were married until October of 1979. Sherman and Sandra lived in Exeter, Lexington and Overton until they bought a farm north of Elm Creek. They had three children: Tammie, Charlie, and Robyn.

Sherman worked on the pipeline and was a farmhand for Leo Schroeder, Ray Nelson, and Burns and Skinner Feedlot. He worked at Western Alfalfa in Elm Creek from 1967 to 1984. Sherman owned his own hay stack moving business from 1969 to 1983. He moved to Scottsbluff in 1987 and worked for a local farmer until April of 1988. Sherman married Renee Langhofer April 23, 1988 and they moved to Alliance to start a home. He worked for Fisher Farms until 1993 and was employed by McDonalds until 1997. Sherman and Renee returned to Scottsbluff and bought their home in 1997. Sherman began working at Regional West Medical Center where he remained until his retirement in 2004.

Sherman enjoyed his retirement spending time working in his yard, tending to his roses, wood working, tinkering in his shop, and going to auctions. He liked helping the neighbors across the street with little projects. Sherman always enjoyed talking about "the good old days" with family and his best friend was his dog, DJ.
