Donald L Hallsted, 82, of Lewellen, NE passed away August 10, 2012.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at The First Baptist Church, 2612 West A Street, Ogallala, Nebraska with Pastor Curtis Tschetter officiating. Inurnment will follow at a later date at the Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron, Nebraska.
Memorials are to be made to the Huntington's Chorea Foundation or Donor's Choice.
Don was born at home at Chadron, Nebraska March 28, 1930, to Levi and Minnie (Wovington) Hallsted. His father Levi died six months before Don's birth.
Don attended school in Chadron dropping out to work before completing high school.
On April 16, 1948 he married Shirley Jean Tvrz. Their children were Billy Breen in 1958 and Larry Gene in 1960 and daughter Judy Ann joined the family in March of 1963.
Don joined the Navy in 1951 serving two rotations in the Western Pacific on the USS Dixie AD14 and the USS Gerke DD783. He was injured onboard the Dixie and spent over a year in Balboa Navy Hospital. He was discharged at the end of November 1955.
Don drove trucks for many different companies, but spent most of his working life owning and managing moving companies Allied and Mayflower Van Lines. After retiring he drove a bus for Wades Bus Co. and a fuel tanker for Bosselman's Truck Co.
Don married Myrna Dancer Husmann on April 30, 1988. In 1992 they sold the moving company and moved to Lewellen, Nebraska. In 2001 they purchased a second home in Quartzsite, AZ, and spent winters there for the next ten years.
Don was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ogallala, American Legion, Life member Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charter Life Member Disabled American Veterans, past member of the Dawes Court of Honor, one of the founders of the Nebraska Veterans Legislative Council, member of the BPOE National Foundation.
Survivors are wife, Myrna; daughter, Judy (Carl) Gall of Morrill, NE; stepdaughters, Chris (Doug) Fastenau of Sutherland, NE; Mickey Gette of Winfield, KS; and Kellie (Tom) Blickenstaff of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Michael Toney, Nickolas, Misty, and Micah Hallsted; step-grandchildren, Traci Allen, Jeff Gette, Kodie Rawley, Sara O'Hare, Kyle Fastenau, Abby Kelly, and Brian Wilson; 10 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Proceeding him in death were his parents; five brothers and their wives - Arthur (Esther) Hallsted, Walter (Elizabeth) Hallsted, Wayne (Flora) Hallsted, and Leonard (Eloise) Hallsted and Lawrence, who died when a baby; his first wife Shirley, and both sons Billy and Gene.
