Gering man arrested for residential burglary, vandalism
Gering Police say an 18 year old man has been charged with a residential burglary and vandalism Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Byron Stieb of Gering is charged with the break-in at the home of Mary Votruba at 1180 17th Street. She was not home at the time of the crime.
According to a court document Stieb was arrested as he and another man were carrying a large television out of an apartment across the street from the burglarized home. The document says Stieb told officers he and three other males gained entry through a basement window of the house, and took the television, a rifle, a bag full of coins, a mattress, jewelry and a baseball bat. Stieb said the four entered the house three times, the third time vandalizing the home.
The court document said when they arrived at the crime scene Police noticed furniture had been thrown around and overturned, there were holes in the hallway walls, a china cabinet and its contents were damaged, rooms were ransacked, and there were broken lamps and jewelery boxes.
Nearly all of the property taken was recovered, according to Captain George Holthus. At the moment Stieb is the only one charged.
